Paul Chabas, a French academic painter trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris under William-Adolphe Bouguereau and Tony Robert-Fleury, is best known for his idealised representations of the female nude, often set in serene natural environments. His most celebrated work, September Morn (1912), brought him international recognition and became one of the most widely reproduced images of its time.
Our oil on cardboard depicts a nude female figure, likely crouching in shallow water, and raising a shell toward the light as if examining it. The pose suggests an introspective moment of discovery and wonder. The figure is rendered with soft tonal modelling and subtle variations of colour, set against a lightly worked, neutral ground that enhances the impression of silvery light reflected in her gaze.
Possibly conceived as a preparatory study for a larger composition, the work focuses on the delicate rendering of light, gesture, and the articulation of the young female body, treated with restraint and without overt sensuality.
