Isidore Pils
Paris 1815 – 1875 Douarnenez
Study of Drapery and Foot
preparatory for the fresco Le Charme
de la Musique
at the Opéra Garnier

Trois crayons on beige paper

220 × 260 mm

An academic painter trained at the École des Beaux-Arts and a recipient of the Prix de Rome, Isidore Pils was initially known for his historical and military subjects, although, during the Second Empire, he became an important decorator of public buildings. Among his major commissions is his contribution to the decoration of the Palais Garnier, where he executed part of the painted ceiling ensemble, developing large-scale allegorical compositions in keeping with the grand decorative programme of the Opéra.

Our study can be related to the seated female figure on the left of Pils’ fresco Le Charme de la Musique (fig. 1) which decorates the ceiling of the Grand Staircase at the Opéra. The treatment of the drapery and of the foot corresponds closely, suggesting that the drawing served as a preparatory study for that figure.

Our study of drapery, executed in the trois crayons technique, is carefully constructed through soft gradations and controlled shading, allowing the volume to emerge with clarity while retaining a sense of fluidity. Particular attention is given to the weight and tension of the cloth as it gathers and falls around the underlying limbs.
